You can place the Search module itself on any page, but your site must contain a page called "search:site" that (also) contains the Search module.
What is the logic behind this requirement? I simply do not want a "search"category that only contains "search:site." (I put all of my navigational pages and page parts into the "nav" category.) As far as I am concerned, it is a bug that a site has to have a "search:site" page in order for search to work properly.
The sensible behavior is to have the Search module return results on the page from whence it came, unless configured to go elsewhere. In addition, there should be an Admin configuration for the global search field, to indicate the page on which to return results.
You can do this via Javascript, google "back button javascript". If you need I'll post a tutorial on my site.
