In our forum, we have some game development competitions that each have their own category within the forum. There are some "front matter" type forum threads that I've made sticky, that apply the same to each competition and their respective category equally. This includes things like competition rules and such.
It would be really nice if I could take a forum thread and just simply clone it to each competition category, in a way such that edits in one place are visible in the other places as well.
This doesn't have to apply to all threads. Perhaps only sticky threads or something like that. I've been told by one of the users in my forum that phpBB has this feature.
Without this, I have to manually copy the content of the thread over and create a new thread in each forum category I create. It's not the end of the world, but it would be nice if they could just share certain specific threads.
Alternatively, the ability to choose a category or group to have it apply to would cover my needs as well. In fact, that might be easier to work with from a user's standpoint because it might be implemented as a drop down box with each forum category in it, as opposed to having you pick and choose each category it belongs to.
Well it turns out phpBB doesn't support this out of the box, but many people end up creating scripts to handle this. Basically we need a way to be able to create a topic that only displays in forums in a particular category as an announcement or sticky. So if we had a Category called General that has two or three different forums, and we have a Category called Programming that has two or three different forums, and we want to make an announcement that's specific to the Programming category that will only show up in the two or three forums under the Programming category, we could specify so when creating the topic.
Maybe have an option at the bottom of the topic editor page that lets you specify if you want it to only be visible in particular categories' forums and lets you list off the categories where it's visible?
The problems ar 2:
1. you CANNOT INCLUDE any source ( page) into such sticky Thread - it would solve this problem immediately - one place to change and displayed in many forum categories/Threads. like this
[[include :community:blog:multi-pm-bookmarklet-available]]
(this is not allowed in forum posts…for security reasons
2. You cannot make a PART of a forum "private" ( like for programmers or admins of wiki) - that means you cannot create 2 forum's in one wiki with the standard forum.
BUT: you can use the page-oriented forum like the admin forum does - without any standard forum setttings ( you could use it for per page discussions of course and "Help" and "Genral" category) :
see the documentation on our "Community-Playground" on the http://community-playground.wikidot.com/admin-forum
and the example on http://community-playground.wikidot.com/admin-forum:start
With this technic you can use wiki-categories for different forums and can set the permissions like for other source pages..
This is a complete different "forum"-technic using standard wiki pages and categories and tags and parenting
Have a look!
