Actually, is not the number of pages, it's the size of the sitemap.xml file. Google limits it to 50K bytes in size. For large sites like this, the code that generates the sitemap should check the size and create multiple sitemap xml files (sitemap-1.xml, sitemap-2.xml, etc.) as necessary and make the main sitemap.xml file a sitemap index file that points to the multiple sitemap files.
