We have the translate.wikidot.com site where users can contribute translations to their language. There is one limitation though, there can be only one version of translation for given language (for example pt-br can't be created as a translation separate from pt).
The idea is to allow variants of translations named similarly to locales in Linux:
{language_code}-{country_code}, for example:
- en-us (in Linux: en_US)
- en-au (in Linux: en_AU)
- pt-br (in Linux: pt_BR)
When site or user used that variant, a message would be displayed using translations in the following order:
- the {language_code}-{country_code} translation
- the {language_code} translation
- the original English message
NOTE: this scheme could be also exploited to create multilingual fun/joke translations, like en-pr for pirate translation.
Rate this wish up to make it a priority over other things!
In the mean time, could we create languages on translate.wikidot.com using that language syntax? More explained, would it be practical for us to already start creating such country variations before this feature is implemented?
Yes!

+2 so either James or Piotr forgot to rate up? :)

Polish has only one official variant and the English translation is already understandable for me, so I don't really need this wish implemented. I just added it as a way to organize this issue…

Does this goes for two alphabets of the same language? The Serbian case is different, I cannot put the country code since it is two alphabets and not two countries. I would need sr-cyrillic and sr-latin.

Let this be sr for Cyrillic and sr-lt for Latin, or anything that makes sense, it's a matter of naming only.

I don't mind, you can call it whatever you consider correct. Just make it possible. :):):):):) I am not a formalist at all… :P
As far as this issue is concerned, I already asked somewhere else (I can't remember where, sorry) if there's a possibility to transliterate automatically this already existing Cyrillic translation to Latin script, because they should be identical, only with two scripts. There are transliteration programs and web pages (FF has an adon for this), and if you can do this, I can give you the list of Cyrillic letters and theirs correspondents in Latin Alphabet…

Sure, once this wish is implemented and a symbol of Latin Serbian translation is invented, a very simple program can be written that will iterate through one translation (using API) and transliterate it into other. It's good the original translation is Cyrillic, because we don't need to watch out for things to not transliterate like Wikidot or HTML tags, which would be a problem in converting from Latin to Cyrillic.

Exactly. :) I did the same with SMF forum translation. First Cyrillic version, and then Latin one is done in a blink of an eye, without any possibility of error, because Latin letters in the HTML code stay Latin ones. :):):):)

I've created the "AU" language type (Australian English … to be renamed to en-AU if this wish is accepted).

So far my main changes are changing "color" to "colour", and a few other minor changes like that. IIRC leaving fields blank means that it is taken from the default English (US) language instead, so I've only filled in the fields that I made changes to.

And I've started the Aussie language too!
