This can effectively be done with the match property and regex (see this thread and a couple of posts in this thread), but regex is not simple or easily understood by most users.
A required property that we can set true or false for all fields is a really good idea and part of the design sketch (if that's still valid).

Correct. Sorry, I was thinking of text boxes and not other selection lists. I don't think there's a workaround for that problem.

this seems to work, the date field can not be empty in this way.
