Have received yet another request from someone for smileys, and once again I need to tell them that the only way to do it is to use the image syntax.
Please consider this!
For serious, business-style websites they may want to turn this off, so it should be accompanied by a simple on/off switch in the site manager.
And for those that want to, it should be implemented in a way that lets users replace the smileys with their own images using CSS (e.g. span with a different class name for each smiley face).
What would be really awesome would be the ability to define custom smileys in the site manager — but I suspect that will be a lot harder to implement and therefore I don't hold out much hope for it.
+1
I'm still in mourning for Wish 167: "Automatic code replacement...", which would give us smileys as one of its simplest uses.
Yes, that would be awesome. Along with, of course, making it easier for new users to migrate from existing wiki farms (they can continue using the old syntax and have it converted into wikidot syntax when they save).

This is a greatly needed feature!
broxen - Do you want the mustache on or off?… too bad.
I really beg to differ on the "great need" for this. I can't think of one site I run which would need this (even the ones I have for fun).
