what:
a "partial" WYSIWYG editor for Wikidot - for tables only, on place of the current "Table Wizard"
why:
Making tables in Wikidot is a great pain and more often than not content in web sites needs to be structured in tables.
importance:
*should be available by default | *I need this as soon as possible | *this will be useful for everyone | *this would help Wikidot get more popular | *this would speed up the work of Wikidot contributors and thus the overall progress of Wikidot
There is no plans for WYSIWYG editor in any aspect.

What is the rationale?

The way we see the problem, rich text editing we are sometimes considering would support basic formatting, such as bold, italic, headings etc., leaving more advanced wiki structures as wiki syntax as it is now. Tables support in WYSIWYG mode (design mode) is very often tricky in browser, and we would not include it straightforward.
We know that editing large tables can be painful. I think what you called "WYSIWYG for Tables" is a bit inaccurate and confusing. The wish is about more convenient table editing.
Maki: do you have an idea how such an "aided editing" would work?

I'm not
maki, but I'd suggest something similar to Microsoft Word as a starting point.
From a drop-down list you are given a grid of about 10 x 10 squares. Using the mouse you click on a square that represents both the number of columns & the number of rows in the initial table.
I think that creating a table automatically in this way would be a good start and would save a lot of typing. Even if there is no WYSIWYG editing for tables, creating the tables in this way (click on a square and it automatically adds the code for the given number of rows and columns) would still be very useful.
Edit: In case you haven't used Microsoft Word recently… here's an example that shows the drop-down menu that I am referring to: Creating a table in Word 2007

By WYSIWYG I meant exactly "what you see is what you get" - that is, I would be able to edit a table on screen, just like in MS Word and it would appear on the web page the same way. In other words, I would expect these buttons (commands) to be available:
I would also expect the code of the table to be the one for custom tables, not simple ones.
As you point that this would be too difficult to implement, then, the next best thing which comes to mind is syntax highlighting.
Syntax highlighting will tremendously help in making tables.
If Wikidot is to be a syntax-centric rather than WYSIWYG-centric editor, then syntax highlighting is obviously a must.
Syntax highlighting would benefit anyone on Wikidot. It would make work for everyone easier and faster. Major contributing users would have more time to contribute to Wikidot. It would make a good impression on newcomers considering Wikidot.

I intend to add a table editor, and data form editor, to STE. Just need to find the time.

I'm not
maki either, but I would suggest a wizard for creating the table, and then some relative of Edit Sections for "WYSIWYG", including some way to edit the metadata (class and style) of table, row and cell.
I know Edit Sections is a large and complex beast, but what I imagine is when Edit Sections is switched on, each cell of every (new style) table becomes a link to edit a single cell. So just the [[cell]] and [[/cell]] tags and everything between them. Similarly, there will be a link beside each row to edit the whole row.
The idea of writing that makes me shudder and I haven't seen Edit Sections ;-) But it would be very nice to use.
It seems there's no point in creating a wish for a real WYSIWYG editor in WikiDot (like TinyMCE), after what I read here…. It's a shame! I can't accept the reasons against it, since it only affects professional wiki users, and they don't care…
WYSIWYG for wikidot would attract a lot of people who can't or don't want to learn the wiki-syntax. It would speed up editing a lot.
Bummer…

I can imagine that this would be usefull if the admoin can SWITCH to one suich editor for the whole site… than there wouold be nor difficulty in the usage between the other members…
