Since this is here, I'll just uprate and bump it, but it should really be upgraded to a bug.
The deprecated modules do not seem to support joining an open site, which leaves the only join button being the one on the top Wikidot toolbar. Of course even free, open sites can now disable that toolbar, and they may not understand that by doing so they now have no means for anyone to join the site.
It's waiting for UI redesign.

Done, new sites are using Join module now instead of those two deprecated.
