Put it this way.
You have “fixed” something that nobody was complaining about.
Your “fix” actually breaks some of my useful code.
Now I'm complaining about it, because it was working fine beforehand.
Please help me out here!
I don't believe that %%total_matched%% is a good choice of name for the variable. You're basically contradicting yourself:
The "limit" attribute is also part of the module's criteria, therefore the total variable now acts as it should. Therefore by definition, %%total_matched%% == %%total%%.
Something like %%total_ignorelimit%% would be more descriptive… but we'd need a better variable name than that, as that just look strange… and doesn't follow the same rules for variable naming as all other variables do.
However, I'm going to rate this up. You gave a great use-case; manually creating auto-numbered categories. For when someone doesn't have access to the site manager (MA gone AWOL) or for when you want more than just a number for the page name… but something like category:autonumber1, category:autonumber2, etc. [At least, I think that's what you were saying was possible… :P]

Exactly

Okay, I got that second part right then :) Do you understand what I'm trying to say in the first part of my post?

Yeah, but I'm not concerned about the name of the variable, it's the functionality that I require.
This works only until you delete some of the pages from the category and until two guys click on the same "New Page" link at once. So I really don't think you're solving a problem right.
I think we could name the variables as follows:

That's right.
Thankyou very very much, I would deeply appreciate this :)
To make this complete I would also add %%limit%%.

And… %%limit%% would be exactly the same as %%total%% now, after the recent changes to ListPages?

Wikidot: Official Documentation | Wikidot Discord server | NEW: Wikiroo, backup tool (in development)
No, because if the total number of pages is smaller than %%limit%%, it currently displays the smaller number.
@ Piotr, thankyou muchly!!!
Ah, so this is correct?

%%limit%% would be the same as limit parameter passed to ListPages. Not really useful, but it could be there for completeness (if we had %%total%% and %%total_or_limit%%).

Hmm, there is a way it could be useful, but it depends.
If we pass a /limit/4 object through the URL, and the ListPages variable is limit="@URL", then would the %%limit%% variable display 4 ?
Yes, that would be true. Once I also had an idea to allow accessing URL parts as _template variables. Like %%url{my-variable}%% would return 7 for URL like this:
http://my-site.wikidot.com/somepage/my-variable/7
This could be really powerful, for example to replace default implementation of PagesByTags by showing ListPages + text: "Showing pages having tag: %%url{tag}%%"
EDIT: right now this could be done only as a module (so you couldn't use the arguments passed by URL as parameters to other module).

We REALLY need that! Do we need to make a wish?
Kenneth Tsang (@jxeeno)
Yes, I think so. Then there's a centralised place to collect all discussion about the potential feature (and a place for the dev's to either accept or reject it)

FOR F**K'S SAKE!
HOW LONG do I have to wait for you to rectify the damage YOU CAUSED by changing the %%total%% variable?????
I'm SICK of being polite with this issue. You DAMAGED MY WIKIS. Why can't you FIX THEM?
James, you can't rely on broken things and blame those who fix them for breaking your things. As you know we have plenty of things to do to keep this service working and to improve it, so please respect that not all wishes have high priority.

My patience with Wikidot, Piotr, is wearing very very thin.
Now ask yourself “Why in the world would James be unhappy with us?”
Then ask yourself “What has changed in the past 6 months?”
James, I'm sorry to tell this to you, but I think you're over-reacting.

Piotr, I'm sorry to tell you this, but you only respond to people who “over-react”.
Wikidot ignores the polite diplomatic users.
Wikidot has shown a clear interest in responding to angry users.
Where I have been polite, I have been ignored. Just to name a few examples:
For f**k's sake, if you do anything, it should be the opposite: ignore angry irrational users and respond to polite helpful users.
As you probably noticed, my only reaction to you over-reacting was saying you're over-reacting. This won't give you any profit.

Perhaps we are lost in translation here… I am saying that YOU HAVEN'T RESPONDED TO MY DIPLOMATIC POSTS, AT ALL!!!!
Done. Documentation updated as well.

Thanks Piotr !
That WAS FAST….!
I copied the relevant documention here:
If limit is passed to the module, %%total_or_limit%% is %%total%% or %%limit%% whichever is smaller
