We have a particular page that we've designated as the "to watch" page. We're using it to ask one another questions, get advice, and notify of changes. It sees a pretty decent amount of traffic. Some of us cannot spell or construct meaningful sentences the first time around, so a major edit to this page is often followed by 3 or 4 typo corrections. Each of these later edits produces a notification to the watchers, and I feel bad about spamming my dad in this manner.
I want a way to tell Wikidot "this edit doesn't really count" so it doesn't notify watchers, and possibly isn't even logged in source control. This should have some small diff limit, to prevent abuse.
I already submitted a wish about this a long time ago under the name "an option whether to send a notification to the members or not when saving changes (a check box next to the "save" -button)".
For some reason, when they opened this new feedback site, it didn't get moved here.

@jjs: That's strange. I can't find it on either this site or the blog site now — do you know where it's been moved to, or is this the wish to rate up now?

For some reason, it's here now: http://feedback.wikidot.com/wish:157
There should be a way to combine duplicate wishes.
I wonder if this is ever going to be implemented.

Technically, it has. Just not in the way it is being requested.
If you use the API it does not send e-mail notifications. This is always the case, but soon we'll have the option to turn that on and off when creating and editing pages with the API - a more complete solution.
For example, if you use my STE program you'll notice that any pages you create or edit do not send e-mail notifications (because the pages are modified using the Wikidot API).

Oh, I didn't know that. Has this been written anywhere in the editor -documentation? If not, it would be good to mention it.
And the future option to turn it on or off sounds great!

This is a nice suggestion. There is however one use case when someone wants all notifications: site admins / moderators. Getting all activity, even smallest edits, is the way to stop vandalism (and spamming) if you have open permissions.
"Small diff limit" might not necessarily be a good restriction, because once can insert links with as little as one line change. Or have many small edits.
So at least admins should have a way to get all notifications…
What do you think?

Yes there was discussion about this issue with Shane and Pieter in the wish I posted. I just can't find it anymore.

Probably only site members should be able to use the "trivial edit" checkbox + it could be active only for no longer than 100 characters change (or something like this).

But with open membership model everyone can become a member, so this might not work. Maybe based on how long a person is a member? Or number of edits so far?

I was thinking this more of an admin -tool only. For making visual, structural and other changes that do not add any real content to the site.

I agree. Any content change, even minor, should be sent to everyone as an update.
It's the display differences (adding an extra div or two, or changing hidden tags) that non-administrative users don't need or want to see.

How about allowing users to filter watch notifications based on change description text. Then one could configure the filter to ignore empty text or text with minor or typo. Perhaps allow this on a per watch basis?
