Actually we should start working on monthly payments soon, but we need to find a decent payment gateway too.

By "recursive payments", do you mean that at the end of the month, the user is automatically charged to their account for another month's worth of premium? That sounds like a good way to prevent people forgetting to pay and suddenly realising that they're running off a free account instead.
People should be made clearly aware of the process to take if they want to unsubscribe from the auto-updates though, and to let the account lapse when the payment period has ended (whether that be 1 month or 6 months)

It should have said "recurring" not "recursive".

I didn't think it sounded right…

Right, recurring. Thanks.

I can't think of one subscription (except Wikidot) that I have that doesn't automatically assume I want to continue. I typically get an email notification 2-4 weeks in advance of the expiration date notifying me that my credit card will automatically be billed unless I log in and cancel. They also ask that I make sure my credit card info is current.

Paypal has a recurring payment option, which is painless for the customer and is probably painless for the business. But I imagine I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs.
On the other hand, recursive payments sound very painful ;-)
