Disagree. Forum signatures should be as brief as possible. IMO they waste page space and make you have to do too much unnecessary scrolling.

Me too. I also hate those big pictures in signatures so I have to spent unnecessary time in searching for actual post text…

Ah, but you missed the part where the ability to not see peoples' signatures becomes a pro-only feature. :-) It is somewhat like in-site advertising. Anyone can use their footer to advertise their projects. And you can choose to ignore it all as a pro user.

Well, ok. But… (There is always a "but"… :P)
I don't have nothing against advertising the projects in signatures. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't like to ignore them, since sometimes I do click to the links and see what other people do. I just want to say that it can be equally done with a lot less space… One thing is to use the space, and completely another to abuse it. You should put the limit to pictures, too…
I mean, it is like with TV adds. It is ok to have them, but NOT if each add section lasts half an hour! I manage to walk a dog, to wash dishes, even to take a quick shower, and they are still on… In the end, you fogret what were you seeing and go to bed… The same thing is with forum posts. If you have to scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, read a message, then again scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, read a message, then scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, then… Err… What was that I was reading about….???

:-) I just click on notification links and don't read anything else.

heheh, You seem to have the answer to everything… But… I am not so easy to win…. Ok, you do that because you get notifications to your email, you follow all the Wikidot sites, and that's ok, but what about the people who don't get notifications, because they are not interested in each and every thread in each and every forum at Wikidot? Imagine a typical Wikidot user who wants help`, and tries to find the answer in forum Can we help you? at the Communty site…. He finds the thread that interests him, but alas, he has to scroll, and scroll, and scroll, and scroll… Until he forgets why he has even come to this Community site…

Yes, I've been told that before :-) Not always as a compliment.
Signatures are annoying, yes. I've looked at ways of restricting their size, preventing image links, etc. but in the end what I realized is that (a) some people really want to make spammy signatures, (b) other people really hate that and (c) signatures become a kind of intra-wikidot advertising and (d) that means possible revenue for Wikidot.
I'm not being 100% serious but there is something to explore here.

Where have you had to do this Brunni? I use an image in my signature as do some others, but they are not huge and as far as I can see do not add as greatly to the scrolling as your post makes out.

really the wikidot signatures are not that bad. im mean, im a member of other site were people have 3 600x400px pictures in a row. now that really gets annoying.
and now matter how much you limit the signatures, people will always get around that limitation by manually posting things every time like they did back when sigs were pro accounts only.
Hence rate weneed:84 up.
Well, I see that some here feel alluded… :D But, if you really want to know, I do find these pictures a little bit too much, especially if there are various participants in a row with pictures in signatures…
Rob, I did not refer to anyone in particular, I just gave an example…. And if you really want to know, sometimes I do find it hard to follow the thread if most of participants or all participants have a picture in signature…
But, hey, I was just giving my opinion, and this does not mean anything. Just an opinion, nothing more…

Since when did we have comments on weneeds? O.o
I asked for this not because I want to make a big signature (I dislike them also1), but because I want to make my small signature hold a few more links / look better. That doesn't necessarily mean it will be bigger! :)
I'm restricted on what styling I can add to it at the moment, as I don't have the space to add in an extra div block, or add in border-color:1px solid black
And I'd like to change "PM me" to be a link, that opens in a new window to send me a message. Due to the 400 limit, I can't do that unless I delete the rest of the signature first.

Since we needed them =P
We really did need them, as there is no negative voting here and we should discuss things if we disagree on what we need.
I reckon we need more characters in our signatures too… and more lines (the max 4-line limit is annoying). For instance, I wanted to have some rainbow stripes in my signature:
That code only leaves the final line to put anything else… and I wanted to have one more div block to change the entire position of the rainbow. In addition, the 400 character limit means I can't have more than one link in my signature (currently I have 3 links)

hm, I don't understand. James, you say that because of the limit of FOUR lines, you have only one line in your signature???? This means that divs, tables, etc also count, and not only what appears…? BTW, I like your signature, it is neat and efficient.
How come this? If there is a limit and bacause of it you cannot have more than ONE link, how come you have THREE?
