When I try searching in my wiki space from the main landing page, I frequently get a message 'Operation timed out' and no search results.
It would be great if the search feature would be more robust.

I have been having the same issue for at least a couple of weeks now. Do we have an ETA on when this will get fixed?
The problem has been around a long time. There is no ETA or guarantee that this will ever be fixed. It's probably worth investigating using a third-party solution, like Google custom search. See The Community Site for an example.

Hi we have reworked wikidot servers infrastructure. Search server seems to work much better now.
